Love Split Love

On Breakin’ Up

It’s very rare that two people want to break up at the same time, so usually one person ends up getting hurt. There’s really no way to avoid that, but there are things you can do to make the pain a little easier.

You’ll be tempted to end it with a note or a phone call or a disappearing act because it’s easier, but DON’T. Tell your steady that you need to “talk” about something important, face to face. He or she will know something’s up and have a little time to prepare. Maybe by the time you meet, your steady will realize breaking up is the thing to do. If not, at least there’s a chance to ask questions and try to understand what went wrong.

Realize that there is real pain attatched to love, so it’s understandable that you feel hurt over a breakup. Express anger if you need to — pound your pillow, stomp your feet, have a long talk with your best friend — but be careful what you say and to whom. An outward appearance of “It was great fun but it was just one of those things” will get you over the hump and back in circulation.
